Description

This flag consists of three equal vertical stripes of black, red, and green. A white national emblem is positioned in the center of the red stripe, featuring a mosque with a mihrab and minbar. Encircling the mosque are sheaves of wheat and several lines of Arabic text, including the Shahada.

Symbolism

Historical eras of darkness and the various struggles for sovereignty are commemorated by the black stripe. Red serves as a tribute to the blood of martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the 1919 war for independence from British influence. Hope for a prosperous future and the Islamic faith are represented by the green band. Within the central emblem, the mosque and surrounding wheat symbolize religious values and the agricultural economy.

History

While the white banner was reintroduced in August 2021, the black-red-green tricolor remains a significant national symbol used in various official and international capacities. This design traces its lineage back to the 1928 reforms of King Amanullah Khan, who introduced the stripes after a tour of Europe. Throughout the 20th century, the central emblem was frequently redesigned to reflect changing political ideologies, including periods of monarchy and republic. This version continues to be recognized by international organizations and utilized by Afghan athletic teams.
