Flag of Albania

The national flag of Albania features a solid red rectangular field with an aspect ratio of 5:7. A black, stylized double-headed eagle is positioned in the center, characterized by its symmetrical outspread wings and tail feathers.

The deep red color of the field signifies the bravery, strength, and valor of the Albanian people, as well as the blood shed for their freedom. Central to the design is the black double-headed eagle, a heraldic symbol that traces back to the Byzantine Empire and represents the nation's sovereignty. This avian emblem also references the country's endonym, Shqipëria, which is commonly interpreted as 'Land of the Eagles' in the native language.

Based on the 15th-century coat of arms of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the flag was first raised during the declaration of independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912. Throughout the 20th century, the design underwent several modifications, including the addition of a crown during the monarchy and a yellow-bordered red star during the socialist period. Following the collapse of the communist regime, the current version without any additional emblems was officially readopted on April 7, 1992.
