Symbolism

The colors of the UAE flag are Pan-Arab colors, representing Arab unity. Green symbolizes hope, joy, optimism, and also represents the fertility of the land. White stands for peace and honesty, while black represents the defeat of enemies and the strength of mind. The red represents hardiness, bravery, strength, and courage.

History

It was officially adopted on December 2, 1971, coinciding with the UAE's independence from the United Kingdom. Designed by a young Emirati, Abdullah Al Maainah, the flag was selected from over a thousand entries in a nationwide competition. The flag has remained unchanged since its adoption and replaced various flags used by the individual emirates before unification. The design was intended to represent pan-Arab colors.
