Symbolism
According to the Constitution of Armenia, the top red stripe signifies the Armenian Highland and the people's ongoing struggle for survival and the Christian faith. Blue represents the will of the people to live under peaceful skies. Orange, the bottom color, symbolizes the creative talent and hard-working nature of the Armenian population. Collectively, these colors reflect the historical endurance and cultural aspirations of the nation.
History
Originally designed during the era of the First Republic from 1918 to 1920, the tricolor was later suppressed during the period of Soviet rule. Various iterations of the Armenian SSR flag featuring hammers, sickles, and horizontal blue stripes were utilized until the late 20th century. Official readoption occurred on August 24, 1990, when the Supreme Soviet restored the tricolor as the nation moved toward independence. National legislation and the subsequent 1995 Constitution codified the flag's proportions and specific shades to represent the modern state.
