This national flag features three equal horizontal bands of blue, red, and green from top to bottom. A white crescent and an eight-pointed star are positioned in the center of the middle red stripe.
Symbolism
The blue stripe signifies the Turkic heritage of the Azerbaijani people, while the green stripe represents the nation's Islamic civilization. Progress and the modernization of society are symbolized by the central red band. The eight-pointed star is commonly understood to represent the eight branches of the Turkic people, appearing alongside a crescent moon that serves as a traditional emblem of Islam.
History
The tricolor was originally designed by Ali bey Huseynzade and adopted by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on November 9, 1918. After the Soviet occupation in 1920, it was replaced by a series of red flags representing the Azerbaijan SSR until the late 1980s. The current design was officially readopted on February 5, 1991, as the national symbol of the modern Republic of Azerbaijan.
