A dark green rectangular field serves as the backdrop for a solid red disc positioned slightly toward the hoist side. This specific placement ensures the circle appears centrally located when the cloth is flying. Proportions for the design are officially set at an aspect ratio of 3:5.

The green field represents the lush vegetation and agricultural richness of the land, while also signifying the vibrancy of the nation's youth. Centrally, the red disc symbolizes the sun rising over the region to herald a new era of freedom. This circular element also serves as a solemn tribute to the blood shed by those who died during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Together, these elements evoke the transition from a revolutionary struggle to a sovereign state.

The current design was officially adopted on January 17, 1972, following the nation's independence from Pakistan. An earlier version, first hoisted on March 2, 1971, by student leaders at Dhaka University, included a golden map of the country within the red circle. This map was eventually removed to simplify the manufacturing process and improve visual clarity on both sides of the banner. Since this modification, the design has remained unchanged as the national standard.
