Description
This national flag features a vertical tricolor of green, red, and yellow stripes of equal width. Centered within the middle red band is a single five-pointed yellow star, and the entire design maintains a 2:3 aspect ratio.
Symbolism
Green represents the lush tropical forests and vegetation of the southern region, whereas yellow denotes the sun and the savannas of the north. The central red stripe signifies unity and the blood of the citizens shed during the struggle for independence. Positioned in the center of the red band, the gold star is known as the 'star of unity,' symbolizing the cohesive bond between the nation's diverse territories.
History
Upon gaining independence from France in 1960, the nation originally adopted a plain green, red, and yellow tricolor without any symbols. Following the 1961 unification with British Southern Cameroons, two gold stars were placed in the upper hoist-side green stripe to represent the two federated territories. The current version, which moved a single star to the center, was officially established on May 20, 1975, to signify the transition to a unitary state.
