Symbolism
Light blue represents the sea and sky while also paying tribute to the Issa people, whereas green symbolizes the earth and the Afar people. Peace is represented by the white triangle, providing a neutral ground for the other elements. The red star signifies the unity of the nation and commemorates the blood of martyrs shed during the independence movement.
History
Independence from France on June 27, 1977, marked the official adoption of this flag. The design was heavily influenced by the banner of the Ligue Populaire Africaine pour l'Indépendance (LPAI), the primary political group that advocated for sovereign status. Before 1977, the region was administered as the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas and utilized the French national flag. No changes have been implemented to the design since the country attained statehood.
