Description

A forest green field serves as the background for a centered tricolor cross composed of yellow, black, and white vertical and horizontal bands. At the intersection of the cross sits a red circular disk featuring a Sisserou parrot facing the hoist, encircled by ten five-pointed green stars.

Symbolism

The green background signifies the island's lush landscape, while the central cross represents the Christian religion and the Holy Trinity. Each color within the cross carries specific meaning: yellow for the sun and citrus crops, black for the African ancestry and soil, and white for the island’s pure water. Encircling the national bird, the ten green stars represent the ten administrative parishes of Dominica and the hope for equality. The Sisserou parrot, endemic to the island, is a symbol of flight toward destiny and the preservation of national identity.

History

Following independence from the United Kingdom on November 3, 1978, the nation adopted a design created by Alwin Bully. Minor alterations were implemented in 1981 and 1988 to adjust the order of the stripes and the direction the parrot faced. The present version was formally established in 1990, which introduced a dark green border to the ten stars. Before these national designs, the territory used a British Blue Ensign with a colonial badge depicting a sailing ship.
