Description

The flag features a light blue field with four white five-pointed stars positioned in the center. These stars are arranged in a circular pattern, with each star's points directed outward from the center of the field.

Symbolism

The light blue background represents the surrounding Pacific Ocean and the nation's maritime identity. Four white stars signify the individual states of Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, and Yap. Arranging these stars in a circle conveys the principles of unity and the equal status of each constituent state within the federation.

History

Adopted on November 30, 1978, this design replaced the flag of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) which had been in use since 1965. The original TTPI flag contained six stars, but the number was reduced to four when the Marshall Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Palau opted not to join the federation. This transition marked the establishment of the Federated States of Micronesia as a self-governing entity prior to its formal independence in 1986.
