Perseverance is represented by the black border, and the red triangle symbolizes the zeal and dynamic spirit required for national development.
History
Following a design competition, the national flag was officially adopted upon Guyana's independence from the United Kingdom on May 26, 1966. American vexillologist Whitney Smith submitted the original layout, which was subsequently modified by the British College of Arms to include the black and white fimbriations. Prior to independence, the colony of British Guiana utilized a British Blue Ensign featuring a local badge.
