Description

The national flag consists of a solid red field with a yellow sun centered on the canvas. Within this sun, a stylized depiction of a tunduk is shown, featuring two sets of three intersecting lines inside a circular border. Forty rays extend from the central solar disk toward the edges of the field.

Symbolism

The red color of the field represents the valor and boldness of the nation, echoing the traditional color of the banner used by the folk hero Manas. Forty rays signify the forty original tribes that were unified to form the Kyrgyz people. The central tunduk represents the roof of a yurt, symbolizing the hearth, the home, and the origin of life. Together, these elements emphasize the historical unity and the nomadic heritage of the population.

History

This design was officially adopted by the Supreme Council of Kyrgyzstan on March 3, 1992, shortly after the country gained independence. It succeeded the flag of the Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic, which featured a red field with horizontal blue and white stripes. In late 2023, President Sadyr Japarov signed a law to modify the sun's rays from a wavy shape to a straight one to improve the symbol's clarity.
