Symbolism
The green color represents the fertile lands of the islands, while the red symbolizes the nation's struggle from slavery through colonialism to independence. Yellow embodies the sunshine that graces the islands and also represents the country's optimism. The black symbolizes the African heritage of the people, and the two white stars represent hope and liberty, as well as the two islands that comprise the nation.
History
The current flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis was officially adopted on September 19, 1983, upon the nation's independence from the United Kingdom. It replaced the flag of the Associated State of Saint Christopher and Nevis. The design was chosen from a competition, with Edrice Lewis's submission being selected as the winning entry. It has remained unchanged since its adoption.
