Description
Saint Lucia's flag features a cerulean blue field. Centered on the field are two triangles, one gold and one black, nested one inside the other. The black triangle is isosceles, while the gold triangle is an equilateral triangle, with its base slightly above the base of the black one.
Symbolism
The blue represents fidelity, as well as the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea surrounding the island. The black and white stand for the cultural influences of the African and European peoples. The gold represents sunshine and prosperity. The triangles are meant to evoke the Pitons, Saint Lucia's iconic volcanic plugs, symbolizing the hope and aspirations of the people.
History
The flag of Saint Lucia was adopted on March 1, 1967, upon achieving Associated Statehood. It was slightly modified on February 22, 1979, when Saint Lucia gained independence. The modifications consisted of changes to the size of the triangles. Prior to this design, Saint Lucia utilized British colonial flags featuring badges on a blue ensign.
