Description
This national flag consists of three horizontal stripes of blue, white, and green in a 3:4:3 proportion. Centered on the white stripe is a black silhouette of a mokorotlo, which is a specific type of conical hat. The layout uses a 2:3 aspect ratio.
Symbolism
The blue stripe represents the sky or rain, white signifies peace, and green denotes the land and its prosperity. Centered on the flag, the black mokorotlo represents the Basotho identity and the nation's cultural heritage. These elements correspond directly to the national motto of Khotso, Pula, Nala, which translates to Peace, Rain, Prosperity.
History
Adopted on October 4, 2006, this design was introduced to mark the 40th anniversary of Lesotho's independence. It replaced a military-influenced flag used since 1987 that featured a traditional shield and weapons. The original 1966 independence flag featured a blue field with green and red vertical stripes at the hoist. Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili's government oversaw the transition to the current design to reflect a nation at peace.
