Description
A red rectangular field serves as the background for a centered yellow sun. Eight yellow rays emanate from the sun's disk, with four extending to the corners and four to the midpoints of the edges. This arrangement creates a symmetrical pattern across the 1:2 aspect ratio.
Symbolism
Red and yellow are the traditional colors of the Macedonian region, frequently appearing in historical revolutionary banners. The central sun represents the 'new sun of liberty' mentioned in the national anthem, 'Denes nad Makedonija'. Its eight rays symbolize the radiation of freedom across the territory. These elements collectively commemorate the birth of a sovereign state and the national aspirations for progress.
History
Following independence from Yugoslavia in 1992, the republic initially adopted a flag featuring the Vergina Sun. This choice sparked a diplomatic dispute with Greece, leading to an economic blockade and eventual negotiations. In 1995, the current version was designed by Miroslav Grčev as part of the Interim Accord between the two nations. This revised motif replaced the sixteen-pointed star with a stylized eight-rayed sun to establish a distinct national identity.
