Symbolism
Green represents the riches of the land, black signifies the African continent, and yellow denotes the nation's mineral wealth. The red triangle commemorates the struggle for independence, while the white stripes represent peace. Within the emblem, the AK-47 rifle stands for national defense, the hoe represents agriculture, the book signifies education, and the star symbolizes internationalism.
History
Official adoption of the current design occurred on May 1, 1983, replacing the initial post-independence flag used since 1975. This design is derived from the colors of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO), the primary political force that opposed Portuguese colonial rule. While the 1975 version utilized a radial pattern, the 1983 revision transitioned to horizontal stripes while maintaining the central emblems.
