Description

Distinctive for its non-quadrilateral shape, this flag consists of two stacked triangular pennons. A deep red field is enclosed by a blue border, with two white emblems positioned vertically within the segments. The upper portion displays a stylized crescent moon, while the lower section features a twelve-pointed sun.

Symbolism

Crimson red represents the rhododendron, the national flower, and symbolizes the bravery of the Nepalese people. Peace and harmony are signified by the blue border, while the sun and moon represent the desire for the nation to persist as long as these celestial bodies remain in the sky. Additionally, the moon reflects the serene and cool temperament of the Himalayan people, while the sun denotes their fierce resolve.

History

On December 16, 1962, the current design was officially adopted alongside the establishment of a new constitution. Although the basic double-pennon structure has been used for centuries, the 1962 update standardized the proportions and removed facial features from the celestial symbols. Prior to this unification, the two triangles were often flown separately by different branches of the ruling dynasty.
