Description
The flag is composed of three equal horizontal stripes in red, white, and blue. A circular emblem is positioned in the center of the middle white band. Uniquely, the design on the front of the flag differs from the design on the back, featuring two distinct central seals.
Symbolism
Red represents bravery and patriotism, white symbolizes peace and integrity, and blue stands for liberty and generosity. On the obverse side, the yellow star within the coat of arms commemorates the May 1811 independence movement, flanked by palm and olive branches. The reverse seal features a lion and a Phrygian cap, which together represent the protection of freedom and the sovereignty of the state.
History
Adopted by the General Extraordinary Congress on November 25, 1842, this design replaced a series of temporary flags used after the country's 1811 independence from Spain. The choice of colors was inspired by the French Tricolour, signaling a commitment to republicanism under the leadership of consuls Mariano Roque Alonso and Carlos Antonio López. Although the primary layout has persisted for nearly two centuries, the specific artistic details of the central emblems were updated and standardized most recently in 2013.
