Description

This flag consists of three equal horizontal stripes in black, white, and green from top to bottom. A solid red isosceles triangle is situated at the hoist, with its base aligned against the left edge and its point extending toward the center. The overall proportions of the design follow a 1:2 width-to-length ratio.

Symbolism

The colors of the flag are known as the Pan-Arab colors, reflecting historical Islamic dynasties and regional unity. Black represents the Abbasid Caliphate, while the white stripe signifies the Umayyad Caliphate and green denotes the Fatimid Caliphate. Red is used to symbolize the Hashemite dynasty as well as the sacrifices made during the struggle for national sovereignty. Collectively, these elements commemorate the historical legacy and the enduring aspirations of the Palestinian people.

History

The design is based on the flag used during the 1916 Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire, which was originally designed to represent Arab nationalism. In 1964, the Palestinian National Council officially adopted this specific configuration for the Palestinian people. The Palestine Liberation Organization later reaffirmed its status as the national flag in 1988 following the Palestinian Declaration of Independence. Minor variations in the placement of the green and white stripes existed in earlier versions before the current sequence was standardized.
