Description
The flag of Solomon Islands features a field divided diagonally by a yellow stripe running from the lower hoist corner to the upper fly corner. Above the yellow stripe is a blue triangle, and below it is a green triangle. Five white, five-pointed stars are located in the upper hoist corner.
Symbolism
The blue represents the surrounding ocean, vital to the island nation. Green symbolizes the land, and the yellow stripe represents the sunshine. The five stars stand for the five original administrative districts of the Solomon Islands before its division into provinces: Central, Western, Eastern, Malaita, and Temotu.
History
Adopted in 1977, the flag of Solomon Islands was designed as the islands prepared for independence from the United Kingdom. A competition was held to select the design. Prior to this, the islands used the British Blue Ensign defaced with the islands' coat of arms. The current flag has remained unchanged since its adoption.
