Description
Somalia's flag features a light blue field upon which a large, five-pointed white star is centrally located. The star's points are equidistant from the center and extend towards the four corners and the top center of the flag. The flag's aspect ratio is 2:3, creating a rectangular shape.
Symbolism
The light blue field of the Somali flag is meant to represent the United Nations, which administered the Trust Territory of Somaliland when the flag was created and assisted Somalia towards independence. The white five-pointed star, known as the Star of Unity, symbolizes the five regions where Somalis traditionally reside: Djibouti, Somaliland, Somalia, the Somali Region of Ethiopia, and the North Eastern Province of Kenya. It embodies the aspiration to unite all Somali people within a single nation.
History
The flag of Somalia was adopted on October 12, 1954, five years before the country gained its independence. Designed by Mohammed Awale Liban, it was initially used for the Trust Territory of Somaliland under Italian administration. Following Somalia's independence and unification in 1960, the flag was retained as the national flag, symbolizing unity and hope for the future.
