Description
The flag of Sao Tome and Principe features a horizontal triband of green, yellow, and green. Two black five-pointed stars are placed on the yellow stripe, positioned towards the hoist. A red isosceles triangle is situated at the hoist side of the flag, its base spanning the flag's height.
Symbolism
The red triangle represents the struggle for independence. The two black stars symbolize the two main islands that constitute the nation. Green stands for the lush vegetation of the islands, while yellow represents the sun and cocoa, one of the country's main crops and sources of wealth.
History
Sao Tome and Principe adopted its current flag on July 12, 1975, upon achieving independence from Portugal. This design was created by Manuel Pinto da Costa, the country's first president. Before independence, the islands used the Portuguese flag. The current design has remained unchanged since its adoption.
