Description

Slovenia's flag features three equal horizontal stripes of white (top), blue, and red. On the left side, slightly off-center towards the hoist, is the Coat of Arms of Slovenia. This coat of arms depicts three six-pointed golden stars arranged in an inverted triangle beneath a stylized representation of Mount Triglav in white, with two wavy blue lines representing rivers below.

Symbolism

The white, blue, and red colors are Pan-Slavic, representing unity and solidarity among Slavic peoples. Mount Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak, symbolizes national pride and identity. The three golden stars are taken from the arms of the Counts of Celje, a prominent noble family in Slovenian history, and represent Slovenia's historical heritage. The two wavy blue lines stand for the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia's rivers, representing the country's geographical features.

History

The current flag of Slovenia was officially adopted on June 25, 1991, the day Slovenia declared its independence from Yugoslavia. It is based on the Pan-Slavic colors, a common theme among flags of Slavic nations. Prior to independence, a similar tricolor flag existed, but it lacked the coat of arms. The addition of the coat of arms distinguished it from other similar flags, such as those of Russia and Slovakia.
