Description
The Swedish flag features a Nordic cross in yellow, extending to the edges of a blue field. The vertical part of the cross is offset to the hoist side. Its proportions are 5:8, with the yellow cross dividing the blue field into four rectangles.
Symbolism
The blue field is believed to represent justice, loyalty and vigilance. The yellow cross is thought to symbolize Christianity and generosity. Some historians suggest the colors were inspired by the Swedish coat of arms, which features three golden crowns on a blue background, reflecting Sweden's historical power and sovereignty.
History
Sweden officially adopted its current flag on June 22, 1906. Prior to this, similar designs existed, including flags with a triple tail used by the monarchy. The blue and yellow colors have been associated with Sweden since the 13th century, but the specific design evolved over time. The 1906 adoption standardized the flag and its use throughout the country.
