Description
The flag of the Turks and Caicos Islands features a British Blue Ensign defaced with the territory's coat of arms. A Union Jack occupies the upper hoist quarter, while the fly is a field of dark blue. Centered on the right side is a white shield containing symbols in yellow, white, and natural colors representing the islands.
Symbolism
The blue field of the flag, derived from the Blue Ensign, alludes to the Turks and Caicos Islands' connection to the United Kingdom. The coat of arms depicts a conch shell, a lobster, and a Turk's cap cactus, all significant elements of the islands' natural environment and economy. These symbols represent the unique flora and fauna, as well as the historical importance of the salt industry, associated with the Turk's cap cactus.
History
The current flag was adopted in 1968. As a British Overseas Territory, the Turks and Caicos Islands utilize the British Blue Ensign as their official flag. Prior to the adoption of the coat of arms on the flag, the islands used the Union Jack as their primary flag, as was standard for British territories.
