Description

Uganda's national flag features six horizontal stripes of equal width. These stripes alternate in the sequence: black, yellow, red, black, yellow, red. A white circle is centered on the flag, and within this circle is a grey crowned crane, facing the hoist.

Symbolism

The black stripes represent the African people. Yellow symbolizes sunshine, vital to Uganda's prosperity. Red stands for the blood that unites all Africans in brotherhood and sacrifice. The grey crowned crane is Uganda's national bird, a gentle creature that is featured on Uganda's coat of arms and represents the country's peaceful nature.

History

The flag of Uganda was officially adopted on October 9, 1962, the date of Uganda's independence from the United Kingdom. It replaced the colonial flag previously used. Milton Obote's Uganda People's Congress proposed the design, which was based on the Democratic Party's flag used during the pre-independence elections, with modifications to remove exclusively party-political symbolism.
