Description
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' flag is a vertical tricolor of blue, gold, and green. The blue stripe is positioned on the hoist side, the gold in the center, and the green on the fly side. Three green diamonds are arranged in a centered triangle on the gold stripe.
Symbolism
The blue represents the sky and sea that surround the islands. Gold stands for the warm, bright spirit of the people, as well as the golden sands of the Grenadines. Green symbolizes the lush vegetation and agricultural potential of Saint Vincent. The three diamonds are said to represent the islands' nickname, "Gems of the Antilles."
History
This flag was officially adopted on October 21, 1985, replacing a previous version that featured the coat of arms. The change occurred five years after the nation gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1979. Before independence, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines used the British Blue Ensign defaced with the colonial badge.
