Description

The flag of the US Virgin Islands features a simplified version of the Great Seal of the United States centered on a white field. A yellow American bald eagle holds an olive branch in one talon and three blue arrows in the other. Arranged around the eagle are the capital letters "V" and "I", representing the initials of the Virgin Islands.

Symbolism

The American bald eagle symbolizes the link between the US Virgin Islands and the United States. The olive branch represents peace, while the three arrows stand for the three major islands: Saint Croix, Saint Thomas, and Saint John. Blue symbolizes the surrounding ocean, yellow represents the islands' flowers, and white signifies purity.

History

In 1921, Admiral Summer Ely Simpson, then the naval governor, sought a flag for the territory. Percival Wilson Sparks and his team, including White, Robb, and Watson, created the design. It was officially adopted that same year. The flag has remained unchanged since its adoption, providing a consistent symbol of the US Virgin Islands.
