Symbolism

The red background of the Vietnamese flag represents the blood shed in the struggle for independence. The yellow star symbolizes the five classes in Vietnamese society: intellectuals, farmers, workers, businessmen, and soldiers. Together, these elements are meant to represent national unity and the collective efforts towards building socialism.

History

The current flag of Vietnam was adopted on November 30, 1955, by the government of North Vietnam. It became the flag of the unified Socialist Republic of Vietnam on July 2, 1976, following the end of the Vietnam War. Prior to this, various flags were used by Vietnamese dynasties and the French colonial government. Ho Chi Minh is credited with influencing the design and its adoption by the Viet Minh.
