Description
Samoa's flag features a red field. In the upper left canton is a blue rectangle, within which are five white, five-pointed stars. One larger star is centrally located, surrounded by four smaller stars at each corner of an imaginary rectangle slightly smaller than the blue field.
Symbolism
Red signifies courage. The blue represents freedom. The five white stars depict the Southern Cross constellation, a prominent feature of the Southern Hemisphere sky, and are meant to symbolize Samoa's geographical location and connection to the wider Pacific region. The Southern Cross also represents guidance and direction.
History
The flag of Samoa was officially adopted on February 24, 1949. Prior to this, during the period of New Zealand administration, Samoa used the New Zealand flag and a banner with a palm tree. The adoption of the current flag marked a significant step towards the nation's independence, which was formally achieved in 1962.
