Description

Mokpo Air Base is located in Yeongam County, South Jeolla Province, South Korea, situated near the city of Mokpo. The Republic of Korea Navy owns and operates the installation.

The facility originally opened in 1969 to serve as a stopover for flights between Seoul and Jeju. These operations ceased in 1972, but the airport reopened 20 years later for both civilian and military use. During its period of commercial operation, the base hosted multiple daily flights to Seoul, Jeju, and Busan. On 26 July 1993, Asiana Airlines Flight 733, a Boeing 737-500, struck high ground approximately four kilometers from the runway during its third landing attempt in poor weather conditions. The accident resulted in 68 fatalities.

All civilian passenger services ceased on 5 November 2007 following the opening of Muan International Airport. Several factors contributed to the end of commercial flights, including frequent misty weather and a narrow runway configuration. Passenger volume had also declined following the 1993 crash and the completion of the Seohaean Expressway. Since the termination of commercial services, the installation has functioned as a military air base under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Korea Navy.
