Missile Nirbhay

Description

Development of this subsonic cruise missile system began in India to provide a long-range strike capability. The project completed developmental trials in February 2023. Subsequent development transitioned to the Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM) program to integrate a domestic small turbofan engine and radio-frequency seekers.

The system is an all-weather, surface-to-surface missile utilizing a two-stage propulsion cycle. A solid rocket booster provides initial acceleration before a turbofan engine engages for the cruise phase. Guidance is provided by a mid-course ring laser gyroscope-based inertial navigation system, supplemented by microelectromechanical systems and satellite navigation. Terminal engagement utilizes active radar homing, electro-optical, or imaging infrared seekers. The airframe supports sea-skimming and loitering profiles, allowing the missile to maneuver or re-engage targets. It operates at altitudes ranging from 50 meters to 4 kilometers and can maintain low-altitude flight to avoid radar detection. The payload configuration supports 24 different warhead types, including conventional penetration-cum-blast and blast fragmentation options, as well as nuclear warheads.

The missile is in limited service with the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. It is deployed along the Line of Actual Control. The system is integrated into the national Integrated Rocket Force. Variants are designed for launch from mobile articulated launchers, surface warships via vertical launch modules, and submarine torpedo tubes. While primarily operated by India, the system has been offered to the Hellenic Armed Forces.
