Missile Tien Chien II

Description

Development of the Tien Chien II family began in the 1990s as a beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile. A ship-launched version began development in 1994, with ground-based testing following in 1997. An anti-radiation variant was developed following the completion of the initial air-to-air model. Subsequent iterations include an upgraded air-to-air version with an improved rocket motor and a dedicated ground-based air defense configuration. Newer versions under development include the Tien Chien 3, also designated as TC-5.

The missile employs an inertial navigation system and data-link for mid-course guidance, transitioning to active radar homing for the terminal phase. It features a pulse doppler radar seeker and electronic counter-countermeasure capabilities, enabling the engagement of multiple targets. The anti-radiation variant utilizes a passive radar seeker to target electronic emissions, similar in role to the AGM-88 HARM. The naval version is equipped with folding control surfaces for quad-packing in vertical or oblique launch systems and includes a thrust-vectoring booster to assist launch-phase maneuverability. Ground-based units use a canister-launched configuration mounted on mobile transporter erector launchers. The system is designed to engage aircraft and anti-ship missiles.

The system is operated by the Republic of China Air Force, Navy, and Army. The air-to-air version is integrated onto the F-CK-1 Ching-Kuo fighter. The naval variant is deployed on Tuo Chiang-class corvettes and Yushan-class landing platform docks, with future integration planned for Kang Ding-class vessels. The land-based version is utilized by army air defense units. In 2017, a missile failed to ignite during a training exercise and was lost at sea. The system was included in large-scale live-fire exercises in 2019 and 2024. It has also been displayed in public military parades.
