Bangladesh Navy Fleet Inventory 🇧🇩
Overview
The Bangladesh Navy fleet composition reflects a strategic shift towards a balanced force with enhanced underwater, surface, and aerial capabilities. The submarine arm, a key component of its deterrence strategy, was established with the induction of two refurbished Ming-class submarines from China. More recently, Bangladesh has entered advanced negotiations to acquire six new, more capable Improved Jang Bogo-class (KSS-I) submarines from South Korea. The surface fleet is a diverse mix of frigates, corvettes, and a large number of patrol vessels sourced from China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Korea. This includes several modern guided-missile frigates and corvettes equipped with anti-ship missiles. Naval aviation capabilities have also been established with the procurement of maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters, adding a crucial surveillance and anti-submarine warfare dimension.
The navy's maritime strategy is increasingly focused on area denial and asymmetric warfare to counter numerically superior regional navies. This involves leveraging its submarine force for both offensive and defensive underwater operations. Protecting the nation's EEZ, securing offshore energy resources, and monitoring maritime traffic are primary missions. The development of a new naval headquarters, a major naval base at Patuakhali (BNS Sher-e-Bangla), and a dedicated submarine base at Pekua (BNS Sheikh Hasina) significantly expands the navy's operational reach and sustainability. These bases allow for more effective deployment and logistical support, particularly in the eastern parts of the Bay of Bengal and near the Andaman Sea.
Shipbuilding and local industry are central to the navy's long-term modernization. State-owned shipyards like Khulna Shipyard and Chattogram Dry Dock are now owned and managed by the navy, tasked with building patrol craft, and in the future, larger warships like offshore patrol vessels and frigates. This emphasis on indigenous construction, as seen with the building of Durjoy-class and Padma-class patrol craft, is intended to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and foster self-sufficiency. Future procurement plans are ambitious, including more frigates, offshore patrol vessels, and various auxiliary ships to create a balanced fleet. The potential submarine deal with South Korea also includes provisions for technology transfer, local assembly of components, and long-term maintenance collaboration, further boosting domestic capabilities.
