The Kuwait Naval Force (KNF) is a compact and defensively oriented maritime force primarily focused on coastal defense, protection of territorial waters, and securing critical maritime infrastructure. Having been almost entirely destroyed during the 1990 invasion, its primary strategic objective since has been to rebuild and modernize, ensuring it can deter and respond to regional threats within the Persian Gulf. Its operational reach is consequently limited to its immediate maritime neighborhood, reflecting a strategy of homeland defense rather than blue-water power projection. The navy operates from the single Mohammed Al-Ahmad Kuwait Naval Base.
The core of Kuwait's naval capability resides in its fleet of missile-armed fast patrol boats. These vessels provide the KNF's primary offensive punch, designed for rapid response and anti-surface warfare in the confined waters of the Gulf. This fast-attack fleet is supported by a variety of other patrol boats, landing craft, and support vessels that facilitate coastal security, logistical operations, and amphibious support.
Kuwait is currently engaged in a significant modernization and enhancement of its naval and coast guard assets. A key component of this is a major contract with the UAE's EDGE Group for the supply of eight FALAJ-3 class 62-meter missile boats. Furthermore, through its subsidiary Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB), EDGE is undertaking a comprehensive program to reconstruct, repair, and upgrade existing vessels, including landing craft and patrol boats. This program also includes in-depth personnel training to improve operational readiness and technical expertise. These shipbuilding and upgrade programs are set to significantly enhance Kuwait's ability to respond to maritime threats and secure its coastal waters. Deals have also been signed with UK-based SRT Marine Systems to further bolster the capabilities of the national coastguard, which is a directorate of the Ministry of Interior.
