Military Ranks of Iraq 🇮🇶

The Iraqi Army is the core of the country’s defense establishment and the principal land force. Its mission centers on territorial defense, border security, and internal stability. It fields infantry, armored, artillery, and mechanized units, with a focus on counterinsurgency and urban operations. Although the Army has been rebuilt since 2003, it remains in a continuous process of modernization, with heavy reliance on foreign training and equipment, particularly from the United States.

The Iraqi Air Force provides essential support through reconnaissance, transport, and strike missions. While its capabilities are limited compared to regional powers, it plays a key role in counterterrorism operations, using a mix of fighter aircraft, helicopters, and surveillance platforms. Air assets have been crucial for coordination with ground forces, especially during campaigns against ISIS.

The Iraqi Navy is small but strategically important, given Iraq’s narrow coastline on the Persian Gulf. Its role is focused on maritime security, protecting oil terminals, and ensuring safe navigation of sea routes. The force operates fast patrol boats and relies heavily on coalition cooperation for broader naval defense.

The Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) stands out as Iraq’s most capable and professional fighting unit. Reporting directly to the Prime Minister, it is an elite force specializing in high-risk counterterrorism missions. The CTS—often referred to as the “Golden Division”—was instrumental in the liberation of Mosul and other battles against ISIS, demonstrating operational effectiveness far exceeding regular forces.
