Military Ranks of Moldova 🇲🇩
Overview
The Republic of Moldova, a constitutionally neutral state, maintains its armed forces primarily for the defense of its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the National Army was established in 1991. Its development has been significantly shaped by the Transnistria conflict and the country's ongoing strategic orientation towards closer cooperation with Western partners, including NATO through the Partnership for Peace program and the European Union.
-
Land Forces Command (Comandamentul Forțe Terestre): This is the largest and principal branch of the National Army. It is responsible for all ground-based military operations. The structure is based on brigades and battalions and includes motorized infantry, artillery, reconnaissance, and engineering units. Its main combat formations are the "Moldova," "Ștefan cel Mare," and "Dacia" motorized infantry brigades.
-
Air Force Command (Comandamentul Forțe Aeriene): The Moldovan Air Force is tasked with defending Moldova's airspace, providing air surveillance, and offering air mobility and support to the Land Forces. Due to budget constraints, its combat capability is very limited and consists primarily of transport aircraft and helicopters.
-
Carabinieri Troops (Trupele de Carabinieri): While subordinated to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Carabinieri function as a gendarmerie force with military responsibilities. They are tasked with ensuring public order, protecting critical infrastructure, and combating terrorism. In wartime, they can be integrated into the armed forces to perform territorial defense and internal security missions.
