Description
Svendborg Shipyard Ltd. constructed three Agdlek-class cutters for the Royal Danish Navy between 1973 and 1978. Designed for patrol duties in the waters surrounding Greenland, the vessels entered service between 1974 and 1979.
The design featured ice-strengthened hulls to accommodate operations in Arctic environments. Each vessel was operated by a complement of 14 personnel. The class was succeeded by the larger Knud Rasmussen-class patrol vessels, which replaced the cutters on a one-for-one basis.
Operational deployment typically maintained two vessels on station in Greenland. The third vessel in the class would simultaneously be in transit between Greenland and Denmark or undergoing maintenance at its homeport.
The class consisted of the Agdlek (Y386), Agpa (Y387), and Tulugaq (Y388). Agdlek was commissioned in March 1974 and decommissioned in April 2008. Agpa entered service in May 1974 and was retired in March 2009. The final vessel of the class, Tulugaq, was commissioned in June 1979 and remained in active service until December 2017.
