Description

The İstif class originated from a national warship program designed to establish a domestic naval construction industry. Developed as the second phase of this initiative, the class represents an evolution of the preceding anti-submarine corvette design. The project aimed to transition from specialized coastal vessels to larger, multirole platforms capable of sustained operations and enhanced endurance. The lead vessel underwent its initial steel cutting in early 2017, followed by a launch in 2021, marking a shift toward increased indigenous production of naval hardware.

As a multirole platform, this frigate is designed with an enlarged hull to provide expanded combat capabilities. The vessel integrates a comprehensive suite of sensors, including 4D AESA search radars, hull-mounted sonar, and electro-optical reconnaissance and surveillance systems. Its primary offensive and defensive utility is centered on an indigenous vertical launching system capable of deploying various surface-to-air missiles. The armament is further bolstered by anti-ship missile launchers, torpedo tubes, and a mix of main gun and remote-controlled weapon systems. For electronic defense, the ship utilizes integrated electronic support and countermeasure suites alongside torpedo decoy systems. The inclusion of a dedicated hangar and flight deck allows for the operation of anti-submarine warfare helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles, facilitating diverse mission profiles.

The class is currently entering active service, with the lead unit commissioned in early 2024 for operations within the Turkish Naval Forces. Beyond domestic deployment, the platform has been designated for export, with procurement contracts signed for the Indonesian Navy and an undisclosed Middle Eastern state. These vessels are intended to serve as a bridge in naval development, with the technological integration and operational experience gained from their deployment directly informing the design and system selection for future, larger destroyer classes.
