Description

The Jacob van Heemskerck-class, designated as the L-type, was a class of anti-aircraft warfare frigates built for the Royal Netherlands Navy. It succeeded the Tromp-class and preceded the De Zeven Provinciën-class. The design originated from the Standard frigate program of the 1970s, which utilized common hulls and machinery for specialized variants. The Royal Netherlands Navy initially planned to order twelve anti-submarine Kortenaer-class frigates and one anti-aircraft version. However, the sale of two Kortenaer-class hulls to Greece in 1981 led to the order of two Jacob van Heemskerck-class ships as replacements. These vessels were constructed by Royal Schelde Shipyard between 1981 and 1986.

The class utilized the flush-decked hull and Combined Gas or Gas (COGOG) propulsion system of the Kortenaer-class. To accommodate air defense equipment, the design omitted the helicopter hangar, flight deck, and forward gun. These features were replaced by a Mk 13 launcher for Standard SM-1 medium-range surface-to-air missiles. Additional armament included a Mk 29 launcher for NATO Sea Sparrow missiles, a Goalkeeper close-in weapon system, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and torpedo tubes. The sensor suite featured air search and tracking radars, with dedicated director radars for missile guidance. The original target tracking radar was replaced with SMART tracking radar during the 1990s.

The Jacob van Heemskerck and the Witte de With entered service in 1986. These vessels remained in Dutch service until 2004 and 2005. Both ships were sold to the Chilean Navy in 2005, where they were renamed Almirante Latorre and Capitán Prat. The Chilean Navy operated the frigates until their retirement at the end of 2019. They were replaced by Adelaide-class frigates.
