Description
The Magar-class comprises amphibious warfare vessels operated by the Indian Navy. The design is based on the Round Table-class ships formerly used by the Royal Navy. Construction was performed by Hindustan Shipyard Limited, with fitting out completed at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers. This class succeeded the Kumbhir class and was followed by the Shardul class.
These vessels are configured for amphibious operations and utilize a bow-door system for discharging cargo and personnel directly onto beaches. Operating as landing ship tanks (LST), the class carries landing craft vehicle personnel (LCVP) for ship-to-shore movement. Aviation facilities include platforms capable of supporting medium-lift aircraft for special operations, such as those conducted by MARCOS teams. Internal capacity is configured to transport main battle tanks, armored personnel carriers, and infantry units. Sensors include navigation radar and electronic warfare intercept equipment.
The Indian Navy commissioned the lead ship, INS Magar, in July 1987. It served until its decommissioning in May 2023. The second vessel, INS Gharial, entered service in February 1997 and remains active. The ships have been stationed at the naval base in Visakhapatnam on the east coast of India. Operational history includes participation in Operation Samudra Setu and the transport of relief material. INS Magar was also assigned to the Southern Naval Command during its service life.
