Description
The Type 053H1Q, designated by NATO as the Jianghu-IV class, is a modified version of the Type 053H surface-warfare frigate. Developed by the Hudong Shipyard in the mid-1980s, the design was an experimental variant intended to integrate organic aviation capabilities into the Type 053 family. Only one vessel was constructed in this configuration.
The primary design characteristic of the Type 053H1Q is the removal of aft weapon systems to accommodate a helicopter deck and hangar. This modification enables the vessel to carry and operate a single Harbin Z-9 helicopter. Its armament differs from other Jianghu-class variants, utilizing a compact French-made 100mm main gun and a single dual-box launcher for SY-1 surface-to-surface missiles.
The vessel, hull number 544, was launched in September 1985 and commissioned into the People's Liberation Army Navy North Sea Fleet in December 1985. Originally named Siping, the ship served as a platform for evaluating helicopter operations on small surface combatants. In July 2010, the vessel was renamed Lushun. Following its active fleet service, the ship was transferred to the Chinese Naval Academy to serve as a training ship.
