Description
The Type 053H2G, designated by NATO as the Jiangwei I class, was developed by Hudong Shipyard in Shanghai during the late 1980s. Produced under Project 055, the design was based on the Type 053H2 and intended to replace the Type 053K air defense frigate. The class entered service with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) between 1992 and 1994.
The Type 053H2G was the first multi-role frigate class operated by the PLAN. Its design incorporates a Combined Diesel and Diesel (CODAD) propulsion arrangement and a ZKJ-3C combat data system. Electronics include the Type 360 surface search radar, Type 517H-1 long-range air search radar, and fire-control radars for missile and gun systems. The vessels feature a hangar and flight deck to support Harbin Z-9C or Z-8 helicopters. Armament for the frigate variant consists of the HQ-61B surface-to-air missile system, YJ-83 surface-to-surface missiles, a dual 100 mm automatic gun, and Type 3200 anti-submarine rocket launchers.
Four vessels were completed before the PLAN transitioned to the improved Type 053H3 design. All units initially served in the East Sea Fleet. In 2015, the vessels were decommissioned from the PLAN Surface Force. Three units—Anqing, Huainan, and Huaibei—were transferred to the China Coast Guard. These vessels were reclassified as large patrol vessels and assigned to the 2nd Bureau in Ningbo. During the transition to coast guard service, the missile systems and anti-submarine equipment were removed, and the Z-9C helicopters were replaced by the Z-8. The fourth unit, Tongling, was transferred to the Sri Lanka Navy in 2018. It was commissioned in 2019 as the SLNS Parakramabahu, serving as a patrol vessel.
