Description

The Infanterikanonvagn 91 (Ikv 91) is a high-mobility amphibious assault gun developed to meet the operational requirements of the Swedish Army. Designed and manufactured by Hägglund & Söner, the vehicle utilizes common components from the Pbv 302 armored personnel carrier series. Development resulted in the completion of prototypes in 1969, with a production run of 212 units occurring between 1975 and 1978. The designation translates to "infantry cannon wagon," with the "91" suffix denoting the first vehicle in the 9 cm gun category.

The vehicle layout includes a driver’s station in the forward left hull, a central fighting compartment, and a rear engine compartment. Its primary armament consists of a 90 mm Bofors KV 90 S 73 rifled low-pressure gun. This main gun is equipped with a fume extractor and integrated into a computerized fire-control system that includes a laser rangefinder and hunter-killer capability. Secondary armament includes two 7.62 mm ksp m/39 machine guns—one coaxial and one pintle-mounted on the commander's cupola—and two 71 mm Lyran flare mortars. The vehicle carries 59 rounds of 90 mm ammunition and maintains a rate of fire of 8 rounds per minute. Protection is provided by a sloped revolving turret resistant to 25 mm projectiles, while the hull is armored against 20 mm artillery.

For mobility, the Ikv 91 employs a turbocharged Volvo Penta TD 120 A diesel engine, an Allison four-step automatic transmission, and torsion beam suspension. Its wide tracks and low ground pressure facilitate operations in summer taiga and winter snow. The vehicle is fully amphibious, requiring the erection of screens and a vane to navigate water, and it can fire its main gun while afloat.

The Swedish Army deployed the Ikv 91 within infantry brigades, organized into companies of 12 vehicles. The 10th Mechanized Brigade operated two such companies during the 1980s before transitioning to Centurion tanks. The Ikv 91 was retired from Swedish service in the late 1990s and early 2000s, superseded by Strf 90 combat vehicles and Leopard 2 tanks. A variant designated Ikv 91-105 was developed in the 1980s for the export market, featuring a stabilized Rheinmetall 105 mm gun and a SAAB IR system for night operations. This variant underwent testing by the United States and India but did not result in purchase orders.
