Description
Three Ilyushin Il-76MD heavy transport aircraft were destroyed in Israeli airstrikes on Mehrabad International Airport, Tehran, on March 7, 2026. Satellite imagery analyzed by OSINT researchers on March 9 confirmed the destruction alongside other military transport planes at the airfield. These losses, combined with the Il-76 destroyed at Shiraz on February 28, brought total Il-76 attrition during the conflict to four aircraft, significantly degrading Iran's strategic military airlift capacity. Iran's Il-76 fleet, some acquired from Iraqi aircraft that flew to Iran during the 1991 Gulf War, had been central to transporting military equipment to allied forces across the region.
