Description
Abu Suweir Air Base is an Egyptian Air Force facility located 17.1 kilometers west of Ismailia and 116 kilometers northeast of Cairo. The base is positioned for the defense of the Suez Canal waterway. Established in 1919, the site was originally operated by the British Royal Air Force as RAF Abu Sueir.
During the Second World War, the airfield served the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) Ninth Air Force during the North African campaign. The USAAF 376th Bombardment Group utilized the base from November 1942 to January 1943, operating Consolidated B-24 Liberator aircraft. Between 1918 and 1956, numerous RAF squadrons were stationed at the facility, operating various aircraft types including the Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a, Vickers Wellington, Hawker Hurricane, Gloster Meteor, and de Havilland Vampire. The base was the final station transferred from the RAF to Egyptian control, with the official handover occurring on April 14, 1956.
The base is currently operated by the Egyptian Air Force and houses the 262nd Tactical Fighter Wing. This wing includes the 60th Tactical Fighter Squadron, which operates General Dynamics F-16C/D Block 40 Fighting Falcons. The infrastructure maintains its Second World War airfield configuration, which remains visible in aerial photography.
