Description
Andravida Air Base is a Hellenic Air Force installation located 2.5 kilometers from the town of Andravida in Elis, Greece. The facility houses the 117th Combat Wing and the Air Tactics Center.
Construction of the base began in 1955, and the first air detachment was established in June 1960. In March 1961, this unit became the 117th Combat Group, operating F-84F aircraft under the 339th Fighter-Bomber Squadron. The base was upgraded to a combat wing in May 1969 to support the introduction of F-4E Phantom fighters. This transition required reconstruction of base facilities and the installation of a weather radar, which was completed by 1978.
The first F-4E aircraft arrived in April 1974, equipping the 338th Fighter-Bomber Squadron and the 339th All-Weather Squadron. While the 339th Squadron disbanded in October 2017, the 338th Squadron continues to operate F-4E aircraft at the base. Between 1976 and 1989, Andravida also hosted the 368th Applied Training Flight, which operated T-33 aircraft.
Current operations are conducted by the 117th Combat Wing and the Air Tactics Center. The Air Tactics Center, established in 1983 as a wing-level unit, consolidates the Hellenic Air Force's advanced training programs. This includes the Weapons-Tactics School, which has operated at Andravida since 1975 to provide specialized instruction in air tactics and electronic warfare.
