Description
Anápolis Air Force Base is located in the state of Goiás, Brazil, 12 kilometers from the city of Anápolis and 160 kilometers from Brasília. Construction began on 9 February 1970 to accommodate the Mirage III (designated F-103) fighter. The location was selected based on its proximity to the national capital and studies concerning air traffic and radio interference. The facility became operational on 23 August 1972 with the establishment of the 1st Air Defense Wing (1º ALADA). This unit was decommissioned on 19 April 1979, and its mission was transferred to the 1st Air Defense Group (1º GDA). The base has historically hosted the Mirage III, Mirage 2000, Embraer AT-26 Xavante, and Learjet R-35.
The Brazilian Air Force operates the facility, also designated as ALA2. It hosts the 1st Air Defense Group (Jaguar), which operates squadrons of Saab JAS 39 Gripen E & F (F-39 E & F) and Northrop F-5 EM & FM aircraft. The 1st Troop Transportation Group (Zeus) is stationed at the base and operates Embraer KC-390 aircraft. The 2nd Squadron of the 6th Aviation Group (Guardião) operates Embraer E-99 M and R-99 aircraft. Additionally, the base hosts the 3rd Air Defense Group (3º GDAAE), which operates a surface-to-air missile battery.
The base occupies a total area of 16,000 hectares. Operations include air defense, troop transportation, and aerial surveillance.
