The Dassault Mirage 2000 is a French single-engine, delta-wing multirole jet fighter designed and produced by Dassault Aviation. Developed as an interceptor and strike aircraft to replace the Mirage III, it entered operational service with the French Air Force in 1984. Over 600 aircraft were produced, serving with ten air forces worldwide.
Development
The Mirage 2000 originated from Dassault's "Delta 1000" project in 1972, which was redesigned into the Mirage 2000 after the French Air Force issued official requirements in March 1976. The first prototype conducted its maiden flight on 10 March 1978, reaching Mach 1.02. The first production Mirage 2000C flew on 20 November 1982, with service deliveries commencing in 1983. Production concluded when the final aircraft was delivered to the Hellenic Air Force on 23 November 2007.
Design
The aircraft uses a low-set delta wing with a 58° leading-edge sweep, relaxed stability, and a fly-by-wire flight control system using four analog computers. It is powered by a single SNECMA M53 afterburning turbofan engine, with the M53-P2 version producing 65 kN of dry thrust and 95 kN with afterburner. Sensor systems include Thomson-CSF Doppler radars—such as the RDM, RDI, and multi-target RDY—along with HOTAS cockpit controls and a Martin-Baker zero-zero ejection seat.
Armament
Internal armament consists of twin 30 mm DEFA 554 or GIAT 30-550 F4 revolver cannons with 125 rounds per gun. Nine external hardpoints carry up to 6,300 kg of payload, including Matra Magic-2, Super 530D, and MICA air-to-air missiles. Ground-attack munitions include AS-30L, Paveway, and PGM guided bombs, SCALP EG cruise missiles, Exocet anti-ship missiles, and the ASMP nuclear standoff missile.
Operational History
French Mirage 2000s were deployed during the Gulf War, Bosnian War, Kosovo War, War in Afghanistan, Opération Harmattan in Libya, and the Syrian Civil War. The Indian Air Force operated the type in the 1999 Kargil War, the 2001–2002 India–Pakistan standoff, the 2019 Balakot airstrike, and the 2025 conflict with Pakistan. Additional combat deployments include Peruvian missions during the Cenepa War, United Arab Emirates operations in Yemen and Libya, and Ukrainian interception sorties in the Russo-Ukrainian War. Export operators include Brazil, Egypt, Greece, India, Peru, Qatar, Taiwan, Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates.
